Season chicken with salt and pepper. Set aside.

Heat a large pot over medium heat, add spiced butter and onions. Sauté until deep brown – 7-10 minutes.

Add more oil, Berbere spice, garlic, and ginger. Stir for 2-3 minutes for rich color.

Add water, chicken, tomato paste, paprika, basil, and salt. Cook for 30 minutes.
