Ingredients

  • 2-3 large onions, sliced into rings
  • cup (150g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (91.5g) cornstarch
  • 2 teaspoons (6g) garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon (0.5g) cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon (2g) paprika
  • 2 teaspoons (8g) baking powder
  • teaspoon (7.5g) salt
  • ½ teaspoon (1g) white pepper
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 cup (240ml) beer, add more or less for the right texture
  • 2 cups (118g) Panko breadcrumbs
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  • Cut the onions to about ½-inch thick slices for best results. Separate each slice into rings.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, cayenne, paprika, baking powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Reserve about ¾ cup of the flour mixture (to dust the onion rings). Set aside until ready to dip the onion.
  • Add eggs and beer to the bowl of the flour mixture and whisk until incorporated and the batter is smooth.
  • Then dip the onion ring in the dry flour mixture, shake off any excess flour, and dip it into the beer batter mixture until completely covered. Remove the onion ring and let the excess batter drip off. Coat the onion rings with breadcrumbs and place on a plate.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 375°F/190℃.
  • Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray, arrange the onion rings in a single layer (don't overcrowd the basket), and spray them with cooking spray.
  • Cook until golden brown and crispy, 10-12 minutes (flip at least once for even browning).
  • Remove from the fryer and place on a wire rack to keep them crispy. Repeat with the remaining onion rings.
  • Serve with remoulade, ranch dressing, or tartar sauce, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Avoid overcrowding your air fryer for tender and crispy onion rings.
  • If you're making a large amount of onion rings, there's a nifty trick to serve them all hot at once. After the last batch comes out, toss all the onion rings back into the air fryer (this time layered up) for a minute or two (just long enough to ensure they all warm back up). They'll be just as crisp because they're already fully cooked.
  • If your onions taste a little too sharp, try soaking them in cold water before dredging and frying. Water dilutes the sulfur content, making them milder and sweeter. But pat them dry before coating them with the batter.
