Ingredients

  • 4-5 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, etc.)
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon allspice
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup butter, cold and sliced into cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (177℃). Grease an 8" baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  • Wash, peel, core, and slice apples into thin slices and add to a large bowl. Add lemon juice and vanilla extract and toss to combine thoroughly.
  • In a separate, medium bowl, add flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and salt. Mix well. Add cubed cold butter and use your clean hands to mix in the butter until it forms coarse crumbs. You can also use a pastry cutter to blend the butter and flour mixture.
  • Transfer half of the apple mixture to the bottom of the prepared pie pan and arrange it in an even layer. Top the apple with half of the crumble mixture. Repeat the layers with the rest of the apple and crumbles.
  • Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake for 35-40 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the apples are tender.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, and enjoy.

Notes

  • Cut the apple into thin, uniform slices about ¼-inch thick so they cook evenly.
  • Let your apple Brown Betty cool completely on a wire rack before storing it so it doesn't get soggy. It takes about 2 hours to cool down.
  • It's important to cover it with foil at the beginning so the apples steam and soften. It also keeps the crumble from burning. But it's good to remove the foil for the last 10-15 minutes so the topping browns.
