Mustard BBQ Sauce

Grilling season is here, and I just had to share one of my favorite BBQ sauces, Mustard BBQ Sauce. While most BBQ sauces are tomato-based and require hours of cooking over a wood fire to get that wonderful smoked flavor, this one is as fast and easy as collecting your ingredients and mixing them in a bowl.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup yellow mustard
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • ¼ cup minced onion
  • 3 tablespoons (37.5 g) light brown sugar
  • cup (2 fl oz) apple cider vinegar
  • 1-2 tablespoons (14.7-29.4 g) ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

  • In a medium bowl, combine mustard, honey, minced garlic and onion, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne pepper.
  • Whisk all the ingredients together until thoroughly mixed.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust the ingredients to suit your taste buds with more vinegar, salt, and pepper.
  • Use immediately or store in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 3 weeks.

Notes

  • Put a light coating on the grilled meat, then serve more on the side so everyone can control the amount they want.
  • If it's too sweet, add a little more mustard or vinegar (not salt). If it's too tart, add a little more honey or sugar to balance it out.
  • As with any sauce with sugar in it, wait until the last couple of minutes of grilling to baste the meat. If you put it on sooner, it may burn.
  • If you're cooking with a smoker, put the sauce on 10-15 minutes before it's done.
