Enjoy hot spiced wine when the weather is chilly because this drink is as comforting as it gets. Mulled with cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, cardamom, orange, and star anise, it's a traditional winter cocktail that will warm you from head to toe!
Combine the apple cider, wine, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, juices, allspice, cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, and star anise in a medium saucepan.
Simmer over very low heat for 10 minutes. Not long enough to cook the alcohol out, just enough time to allow flavors to meld together.
Strain out the spices and serve hot, garnished with orange peels and cinnamon sticks.
Notes
Good wine choices in merlot, pinot noir, malbec, or a blend of your favorite dry red wines. No need to go expensive on this one.
Keep it at a low simmer and avoid boiling your beverage as it evaporates the alcohol and brings the bitterness out of the spices.
Feel free to replace the apple cider with more wine, or leave it out if desired.
