Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 2 pounds (907 g) apples, peeled
  • 1-2 tablespoons (15-30 mL) lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon (10 g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon (1 g) ground cinnamon
  • teaspoon (0.33 g) ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon (1 g) ground ginger
  • ¼ cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar

For the Oat Topping

  • 1 cup (125 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (105 g) rolled oats
  • ¾ cup (82 g) chopped pecan
  • ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt
  • 2 teaspoon (8 mL) pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (200 g) light brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons (4 g) ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon (0.5 g) ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon (2 g) baking powder
  • 4 ounces (113 g) unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Make the Apple Filling

  • Preheat oven to 375℉.
  • Grease a 9x13 baking dish with softened butter or use cooking spray.
  • Chop apples into medium chunks, then add to a large bowl with the lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Thoroughly mix until fully combined. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • In another large mixing bowl, combine flour, oats, pecans, salt, vanilla extract, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking powder, and unsalted butter.
  • Top the apple mixture with the oatmeal flour mixture, evenly spread over the apples.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until slightly brown around edges and apples are tender, and the topping is golden brown.
  • Let it cool slightly, then top with vanilla ice and serve at once.

Notes

  • If you're afraid your crumble might get soggy, no worries. Just add more butter. The fat will help the juice from the apples soak in.
  • When it's done, the apples should be bubbling, and the crumble should be nice and golden brown.
