Homemade seasoned salt for an easy and delicious hack.

I have always been a fan of Lawry’s seasoned salt because it’s a quick way of seasoning with just salt. However, I recently started making my own. And, of course, I’m ecstatic to share my recipe with you!

You’ll love this DIY seasoned salt because it saves time and brain power. You know what I mean. As much as I love experimenting with spices, some nights I just want to get it on the table without having to think. Add seasoned salt and jazz up any dish in no time.

And because it’s DIY, you can easily customize it according to your most-used herbs and spices. Just store it in a jar, and it’s good to go!

Where Seasoned Salt Came From

Can you believe that seasoned salt has been around for almost 100 years? Lawrence Frank started something huge when he created an easy spice mix for his restaurant. Salt, sugar, paprika, turmeric, onion, and garlic became a staple seasoning blend in his pantry, and then he started selling it. McCormick got wind of it and bought the recipe.

The ingredient list.

How to Make Seasoned Salt

Mix all the seasonings and salt, and have fun.
  1. Mix – Place all the ingredients: salt, pepper, sugar (feel free to omit for dietary restrictions), paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, and cayenne in a coffee grinder. Add chosen optional ingredients. Pulse several times until the mixture is finely ground and well mixed. (Photos 1-2)
  2. Store in an airtight container. Making your own MSG-free seasoning blends is that easy.

Recipe Tips and Variations

  • Mexican seasonings. Add powdered oregano, coriander, and ancho chili for a spicy alternative.
  • Herbs like rosemary, parsley, and basil add a Mediterranean touch to this DIY seasoning.
  • Omit the sugar and cornstarch for a keto- and paleo-friendly seasoned salt.
  • Salad dressing. Add seasoning salt to olive oil and apple cider vinegar for a quick and easy salad dressing.
  • Please be careful not to oversalt your dish. Start with the amount of salt the recipe calls for, then do a taste test. Add as you would salt.
  • Add umami. Adding dried mushrooms and miso powder turns your seasoned salt into a flavor powerhouse.

Storage Instructions

Keep your homemade seasoning mixes in a glass jar with an airtight lid out of direct sunlight and heat. I love having my seasonings near the stove, but the heat from storing them over the stove will make them age faster. Otherwise, they should be good for 6 to 12 months.

If my seasoning blend is going to be around for more than a month or two, I store it in a plastic, sealable bag. Since it doesn’t contain anti-caking ingredients, it eventually forms a block. Keeping it in a bag lets me break it up if that happens.

Recipes With Seasoned Salt

Turn simple comfort food into mouthwatering treats with a dash of seasoned salt. Scrambled eggs, rice, chicken, fish, etc., get a glow-up in seconds. Experiment with it on air fryer chicken wings, smoked pork chops, pan-seared salmon, and baked chicken tenders.

Other ideas for taking advantage of seasoned salt are steak, hamburgers, potato wedges, sweet potato fries, and popcorn.
