I love keeping homemade spice blends in my pantry. And this fish seasoning has saved me so many times when I need to get dinner together fast. Best of all, it works great no matter how you cook your fish. Whether pan searing, baking, or deep frying, this spice mix has all the seasonings you need.
Homemade Fish Seasoning for Stress-Free Cooking
Who hasn’t been in a rush to get dinner on the table? And that’s when ready-made seasonings become a lifesaver. Certain herbs and spices have an affinity for fish; the first that comes to mind is dill. While this mix doesn’t have dill, it still turns your awesome fish dinner into a flavor party.
Recipe Ingredients
- Garlic Powder – This spice makes it into just about all my spice mixes because of its mouthwatering aroma and flavor.
- Onion Powder – Powder gives the seasoning mix a rich, slightly sweet onion flavor without the moisture onions are known for.
- Celery Seeds – These tiny seeds offer an earthy flavor that rounds out the mix. If they’re not in your pantry, you can replace them with celery salt, dill seeds, or caraway seeds. The taste will change slightly, but it still goes great with fish.
- Black Pepper – To add a mild but noticeable kick, we add some black pepper! I love the fresh ground, but the regular stuff also works great.
- Smoked Paprika – Gives your fish a subtle smokey flavor that is absolutely divine.
- Allspice – This spice is aromatic and savory with slightly peppery tones and tastes amazing with all kinds of seafood (also beef).
- Ginger – Pungent and spicy with just a touch of sweetness, this spice is a must in my fish seasoning.
- Ground Mustard – Tangy and sharp, this one does so much to balance the overall mix.
- Cayenne – You know I love my spice mixes to have a little kick to them. 🔥
- Salt – Salt enhances the other flavors in the mix. But you can leave it out if you’re controlling salt consumption.
How to Make Fish Seasoning
- Combine all the ingredients, garlic and onion powder, celery seeds, black pepper, paprika, allspice, ground ginger, mustard, cayenne pepper, and salt, in a bowl or jar.
- Stir the ingredients or shake the jar (after putting the lid on😉) so that everything thoroughly mixes.
- Store in any airtight container (or even a ziplock bag) and use as desired.
Recipe Variations
- Replace celery seeds with celery salt; just make sure to adjust the amount of plain salt you add accordingly.
- You can use plain paprika if you don’t have smoked, but the smokiness is worth a last-minute trip to the grocery store. 😉
- If you are out of allspice, try pumpkin pie spice instead, which has several spices with flavor profiles similar to allspice.
- Don’t like ginger? Then up the amount of ground mustard. And vice versa, you can replace the mustard with extra ground ginger.
- Cayenne is my go-to for spiciness, but you could add your favorite chili powder.
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure the spices are fresh. To see if they are, rub a little between your fingers before adding them to the mix. If they release an aroma, they’re still good.😍
- You can double, triple, or even quadruple this recipe. Because you’ll want a bigger batch if you make fish a few times a week.
- A general rule of thumb is you’ll want about two teaspoons of seasoning per pound of fish. But you can use more or less, depending on your tastes.
Uses and Storage
Use this fish seasoning in any fish recipe. Yes, literally any fish recipe. Just shake it onto all sides of the fish before cooking. Here are a few of my favorite recipes in which I usually add a generous helping of fish seasoning:
- Beer Battered Fish
- Fish Stew
- Grilled Pompano Fish
- Southern Fried Catfish
- Fried Fish Sandwiches
- Fish Fry Recipes
You can also turn this into a wet marinade by adding a few teaspoons of olive oil and dousing the fish an hour or two before cooking. To be honest, this seasoning is super versatile because it’s even great on chicken and pork dishes! 😋
To store fish seasoning, keep it in an airtight container in the cupboard, out of direct sunlight. But it’s best not to keep it in the fridge as the humidity can dull the spices’ flavor.
FAQs
Depending on how fresh your ingredients are, this seasoning can last 3-6 months when stored properly.
If you’re having trouble getting the seasoning to adhere to the fish, try drizzling it with a bit of olive oil and then patting the seasoning on.
It’s delicious, customizable, and way cheaper than buying premade ones at the store. ‘Nuff said. 😜
Where to Use Fish Seasoning
I love how this seasoning mix enhances flavor, especially of fried fish. Try it with fish and chips or Southern fried catfish, and you’ll see what I mean.
That said, this seasoning can work well with dishes other than fish! Try it on oven-baked pork chops, seasoned rice, or fried shrimp. It’s a fabulous all-purpose seasoning mix.

Hi Imma. Will surely make this spice blend. Question: what is the fish dish above with a sauce over the fish? Looks like fish and grits?. Would definitely like to have that recipe. Thanks for all the wonderful food you’ve shared with us.
