Homemade Dill Sauce – Are you looking for a versatile sauce that works well with seafood, meats, veggies, and more? Then look no further! This homemade dill sauce is mouthwateringly bright, creamy, and oh-so-satisfying.
I initially made this sauce to brighten up my favorite chicken shawarma recipe. It was delightful, but I had a ton of sauce left over. So I started drizzling it over roasted vegetables and salads, which was terrific. Oven-baked salmon was equally amazing! That was so good I may never go back to dipping in ketchup again. 🤩
Needless to say, I absolutely adore this homemade dill sauce. It is incredibly easy to make, literally taking less than five minutes to whip up. Plus, it’s great for dipping or drizzling, and it looks pretty too!

What is Dill Sauce?
Dill sauce is a creamy sauce, usually made with mayonnaise, sour cream, Greek yogurt, or a combination of those ingredients. Lemon juice and fresh dill are the flavor stars here, making this sauce taste tangy and refreshing rather than heavy.
Recipe Ingredients
- Mayonnaise – This ingredient adds richness and a smooth texture that is mouthwateringly delicious. The eggs, vinegar, and oil are the perfect base for many sauces and dressings.
- Sour Cream makes for a silky texture and adds just the right tang to this dressing. If you want to make a low-fat version of this recipe, you can always substitute Greek yogurt.
- Fresh Dill gives this recipe its name and is really the flavor centerpiece in this sauce. Fresh dill is always preferable, but you could use dried instead in a pinch.
- Lemon Juice – Bright and fresh, lemon juice balances the flavors with a nice citrus kick that works perfectly in this sauce.
How to Make Dill Sauce
Mix the Ingredients (Yes, it’s really that easy!)
- Base Ingredients – Thoroughly whisk mayonnaise, sour cream, lemon juice, fresh dill, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
- Add minced garlic, celery seeds, and honey, if you desire, and whisk some more.
- Adjust seasonings to taste, adding more lemon and salt if you want.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use.
Tips and Tricks
- Always wash fresh dill before you use it. Put it in a colander and run water over it to remove any dirt or debris, then transfer the dill to a clean dish towel and pat it dry.
- You can remove dill leaves before chopping, but there’s really no need as long as the stalks are tender. I look for bunches of fresh dill on more petite stalks at the grocery store and then chop it all up, stems and all, for this sauce.
- Minced garlic, celery seeds, and honey are all optional in this recipe, but I highly recommend adding them if you have them on hand. They will add new depths of flavor to an already delicious sauce! 🤤
Make-Ahead Instructions
You can make dill sauce a day or two ahead, and the flavors will meld beautifully. Store it in a glass jar with a lid, and you’re good.
Serving and Storage Instructions
Store dill sauce in an airtight container in the fridge until you are ready to serve it. Give it a quick whisk before dipping or drizzling. It will keep for 3-5 days.
You can also freeze dill sauce in an airtight container for three months to make it in advance, but it may cause it to separate. Thaw the sauce in the fridge overnight the day before you are ready to serve it, and whisk thoroughly before digging in.
FAQs
Dried herbs are usually more concentrated, so you can replace a tablespoon of fresh with a teaspoon of dried. In this recipe, you can substitute 4 tablespoons of dried dill for the ¼ cup of fresh dill.
Oh yeah! Dill has lots of flavonoids, which can help reduce the risk of heart disease. That said, I love it simply because it tastes so good. 😆
Because it contains lemon juice and mayo, this dill sauce may tend to separate when you store it in the fridge. Fortunately, that won’t affect the sauce at all. Just give it a quick whisk before serving it to bring the ingredients back together, and the smooth, silky texture will be restored.
How to Use Dill Sauce
Serve dill sauce in a small condiment bowl for dipping or a small pitcher for drizzling. This sauce goes wonderfully with all things Mediterranean, such as falafel, chicken tagine, chicken shawarma, gyros, Greek salad, pita bread, and more.
I love this sauce as a salad dressing and as a dipping sauce for all things fried. It’s also amazing with seasoned fries, baked crispy cassava fries, and tostones!

Made this last night to go with salmon that we grill in a blackened fish style. The sauce was excellent–had a hard time making myself stop tasting it so there’d be enough to have with dinner! It really nicely complemented the spiciness of the fish rub. This would be great with just about anything. I did knock back the amount of mayo using 1/2 cup and then 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt.
